The hands-on program will allow you to look at live amphibians such as tiny spring peepers and giant bullfrogs; listen to the breeding calls made by frogs and toads; and watch a short video of their breeding calls as well as their different hunting strategies. You can also take a look at 'secretive and elusive' salamanders, including spotted, red-backed and blue-spotted.
This program will be taught be Richard Wolniewicz, an author of various field guides and a producer of natural history videos. A new full-length DVD that Wolniewicz produced, 'The Frogs and Toads of Massachusetts,' will be available for sale and autographing after the show.
Directions
From the south: Take I-95 N to exit #50 and follow Rt. 1 N. At the junction of Rt. 1 and Rt. 97, turn right onto Rt. 97 S (toward Beverly and Danvers). Follow Rt. 97 S and take the second left onto Perkins Row. Follow Perkins Row for 1 mile, and the sanctuary is on the right.
From the north: Take I-95 S to exit #53A and follow Rt. 97 S. At the junction of Rt. 1 and Rt. 97 in Topsfield, stay on Rt. 97 S and take the second left onto Perkins Row. Follow Perkins Row for 1 mile, and the sanctuary is on the right.
