Long celebrated for its historical importance and literary giants, Concord also has a proud agricultural history. In May 2006 Concord formed an Agricultural Committee to bring attention to the many farms that still thrive in this town located under 20 miles from Boston.
Concord Ag Day, the first event planned by the committee, is scheduled for Saturday, September 30 for 10:00 am - 2:00 pm on the Milldam on Main Street, rain or shine. Participating farmers will sell produce, fruit and flowers.
“Ag Day is our way to promote buying local” says committee chair John Bemis of Hutchins Farm, “It’s a farmers’ market with a twist because not only do all of us grow what we sell but we do it in the same town.” The event will showcase the breadth and depth of Concord’s continuing roots in agriculture; participants include Brigham Farm, Colonial Gardens, Hutchins Farm, McGrath Farm, Scimone Farm, Verrill Farm and Walden Bros. Farm; non profits Gaining Ground and Hugh Cargill Community Gardens; honey from Tom Sisson; and plants grown by Chris Dooley from Brigham’s Greenhouses. In addition, the 4H and other agricultural organizations will participate.
The Agricultural Committee’s mission includes promoting the sale of locally grown crops and other farm products and educating Concord residents, and those from the surrounding area, about agricultural issues. The committee will also serve as a conduit for farmers’ concerns to Concord selectmen. With land becoming increasingly valuable, there is a greater threat to maintaining Concord’s traditional agricultural landscape; events such as Ag Day will remind residents of the importance of supporting Concord’s diverse farming community.
For the event on September 30, Concord is closing off the Milldam on Main Street where farmers will sell from their trucks and tables. There will be ample event parking in municipal lots. For additional information call Jennifer Verrill Faddoul at (978) 369.4494.
