Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department have teamed up with renowned outdoor retailer L.L. Bean for the second year to offer free kayaking at Millennium Park in West Roxbury.

L.L. Bean will provide two expert guides from the company’s Outdoor Discovery Schools and 14 kayaks for three one-hour sessions daily on September 21 and September 28. Participants will receive an introduction to recreational kayaking and learn basic skills and safety.

All participants must be at least 8 years of age with children under 18 accompanied by an adult. Registration is open to Boston residents only. All equipment will be provided by L.L. Bean.

Be sure to wear sneakers or water appropriate shoes. Flip-flops or open-toed footwear will not be permitted.

Registration for the September 28 session opens September 16. To apply, please call (617) 635-4505.

Paddlers who sign up can try the sport on the Charles River in West Roxbury, accessible by a pathway at Millennium Park that leads to a public kayak and canoe launch.

Ample free parking and a turnaround allows paddlers to drop their boats within walking distance of the ramp.
