Circus Smirkus, New England’s internationally acclaimed traveling youth circus, brings its razzle-dazzling aerial, clowning, juggling and acrobatic acts to the Buckingham Browne & Nichols school in Cambridge for two all-star benefit shows on April 4.

Circus Smirkus held its first one-ring youth circus in 1987 and has grown into a non-profit, arts and education organization committed to teaching circus arts to children through its traveling, seasonal circus known as the Big Top Tour; a residential summer circus camp; and in-school, artist-in-residence programs. This summer, Circus Smirkus will celebrate its 22nd season, packing up its 750-seat big top and, with performers ranging in age from 10 to 18, leaving its home in Greensboro, VT for a tour of the Northeast.

The theme of the 2009 show is “Smirkus Ever After: A Big Top Fairytale,” with Massachusetts venues in Wilbraham, Wellesley, Lawrence, Sandwich and Revere. The benefit gives audiences a chance to share in the pre-season magic.

Putting the “FUN” into “FUNdraising” will be members of past Big Top Tours, including three Smirkus alumni now performing as clowns with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus; among the trio is Joy Powers, 20, of Lexington and Eric Allen, 19 of Shelburne. Other Bay State performers on the roster include trapeze duo Lindsay Culbert-Olds, 17, of Arlington, and Kia Eastman, 18, of Waltham; acrobat Jamie Nanni, 16, of Wayland; aerialist Anastasia Dickenson, 15, of Lexington; Diablo-ist Jacob Sharpe, 19, of Canton, and contortionist Ariana Ferber-Carter, 17, of Leeds.

Circus Smirkus has been highlighted in media outlets including the Disney Channel, “Fox & Friends,” Family Fun. Boston Magazine, The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune. The Boston Globe called Smirkus a “treasured cultural and educational resource.”
Hosting the two shows, at 3 and 6 p.m., is Buckingham Browne & Nichols (www.bbns.org ) a pre-K-through-12 school known for its challenging, innovative curriculum, with an emphasis on co-curricular athletics, community service and the arts. The school is located at 80 Gerry’s Landing Road, Cambridge.

Advance tickets are $20 for adults (13 and up), $15 for children (2 to 12) and free for those under two, and can be purchased through the Circus Smirkus website at www.smirkus.org . If available, tickets will be sold at the door; $22 for adults, $17 for kids. All proceeds will benefit the 2009 Big Top Tour.
