'Kinderkreuzzug''s story, written by Bertolt Brecht in the years following his escape from Nazi Germany, tells a poignant and grim tale: in 1939, 50 war-orphaned children set out from Poland in search of a land of peace. Brecht's socio-political commentary is as relevant and necessary today as when it was first published in 1941. The simple and direct tone throughout 'Kinderkreuzzug''s 35 4-line stanzas betray a lyric force and beauty that stems from and unfolds in an unadorned and episodic story-telling style that is never sentimental or callous.
Composer Ralf Gawlick, faculty at Boston College, looks to address issues of the human condition in his works and was utterly compelled to write this music: 'Brecht's children still walk and suffer in our collective conscience. Although my music may not give bread, it just may harbor their hope, and ours, for the extraordinary.' Gawlick's prize-winning compositions have received critical aclaim around the world.
