Barber: Cello Concerto
Christine Lamprea '13 M.M. student of Natasha Brofsky
Brahms: Symphony No.2, op.73, D major
Hugh Wolff has clearly demonstrated a special affinity for the music of Samuel Barber--whose long overdue rehabilitation is well underway after much disdain directed at his immediately accessible music during the 20th century.
Wolff has often turned to Barber works for special occasions including the NEC Philharmonia's performance at Boston's Symphony Hall in 2010 when he led the Adagio for Strings and in 2008 when he played Music from a Scene from Shelley on his first performance with the Philharmonia after being appointed Calderwood Director of Orchestras. Wolff's performance of the Violin Concerto with Hilary Hahn and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is one of the most admired recordings of the work . It forms the backdrop of a new film, Deep Blue Sea by noted British director Terence Davies that will be released at the end of March. For more information, click here. Wolff also performed the Violin Concerto with Hannah Choi '11 M.M., a concerto competition winner, in November 2010.
