When Dr. Teresa Stockman discovers hazardous contaminates in the town’s natural spring, she could save the town from disaster. But the repairs threaten the well being of the town, its citizens and businesses, and the doctor’s reputation, career, marriage, and even her children’s futures, are threatened. Dr. Stockman’s course of action could affirm her position as a town hero or could see her forever labeled an enemy of the people.
Ibsen, a Norwegian playwright known as 'the father' of modern drama, wrote An Enemy of the People in 1882; A response to the public outcry against his play Ghosts, which challenged the hypocrisy of Victorian morality and was deemed indecent for its veiled references to syphilis. An Enemy of the People was originally set in a coastal Norwegian town.
Over half a century after Ibsen penned the original, Arthur Miller revisited An Enemy of the People bringing the most well known of numerous adaptations to the stage. Miller’s version enjoyed a successful Broadway run and became a National Educational Television production in 1966. Now, over a century later, the play is receiving new attention because of its still relevant message.
This specific adaptation, including a special Massachusetts-specific twist, has never been produced on stage before. TTG is very happy to be the first community theatre to be able to produce it.
