Until the 19th century, not much was made of the holiday in this part of the world; it was even banned at times in some areas. Then, New Englanders came to embrace it with tenderness and joy.
In the 19th century a foundation was laid for the season to become a time of universal goodwill and heightened cultural awareness.
The following are activities planned for the day:
* Local actors will take us back in history
* New England Conservatory Children’s Chorus and Young Women’s Chorale will give voice to a wide repertoire of seasonal songs from 19th-century New England and from further afield in time and place.
* Cellos 352, a youth ensemble, will add strings to the afternoon’s festivities.
Representatives from three local charities - The Home for Little Wanderers, Friends of Boston’s Homeless, and On the Rise - will be on hand to share information about how they “care for Christmas” and throughout the year.
How You Can 'Care for Christmas'
Caring for Christmas offers the opportunity to honor the traditions which began in the 19th century. Help us care for those in need by donating items from November 25 until December 16. Donated items are tax-deductible. Wish lists for designated charities are on our website and representatives will be on-site to collect monetary donations before and after the program.
