The story's protagonist is a bull, Ferdinand, who has no interest in bullfights.
Instead, he would prefer to smell flowers.
When in the ring, he ignores all provocation and refuses to fight.
The book was written shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil war but was considered a pacifist book by Francisco Franco's supporters.
