Urbanity Dance announces its fall revue, The Sun Queen. Featuring our company, our junior company and our youngest students, this dazzling, interactive performance will travel through six locations in the South End.

This is Urbanity’s third exploration of this particular performance medium, with groups of twenty audience members moving through the different dance spaces over the course of the night.

Artistic Director Betsi Graves refers to it as a “dance crawl”, with the audience members following dancers through the streets of SoWa to each new location, where they witness another chapter in the story of the Sun Queen.

Featuring the distinctively unpredictable and visually arresting choreography that Urbanity has become known for, The Sun Queen looks forward, exploring the next horizon of dance.

The title references King Louis XIV, known among his courtiers as the “Sun King” and praised by contemporary dancers as the founder of classical dance.

The Sun Queen chronicles the arrival of the next great voice in dance and raises an important question about the nature of changing vocabularies.

Specifically, the piece asks when this next voice will come, and whether she will conform to the standards of the time, or revolutionize the form, as Louis did.

The show has four start times, 7:00, 7:20, 7:40 and 8:00.

At each start time a group of twenty audience members will begin their journey through the life of the Sun Queen.
