Samuel Coleridge-Taylor weaves endlessly inventive, folk-inflected melodies that Shimmer in a nest of Brahmsian form and Dvořák-esque harmony for his robust quintet for clarinet and strings.
Light keyboard filigree provides the titular sparkle for Jennifer Higdon’s glimmering, neo-tonal confection Summer Shimmers for winds and piano.
A new work for oboe, viola, and piano by the winner of the Pappalardo Composition Award rounds out the program.
