This evening of music concludes an immersive two days of lectures, masterclasses, open rehearsals, and concerts focused on the work of Dr. Adolphus Hailstork.
Born in upstate New York, Dr. Hailstork’s prolific career has taken him all over the world.
His compositions have been featured everywhere from an officer’s club in Germany to the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building, where his Fanfare on Amazing Grace was performed during the inauguration of President Biden.
His diverse works reflect Dr. Hailstork’s own cultural experience, often touching on—or calling attention to—pivotal moments in U.S.
history, such as the Tulsa Massacre, the murder of George Floyd, and the life and assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Probably best known for his choral and band pieces, Dr. Hailstork has said that he hopes to instill a “Determination to make a better culture” through his music.
Castle of our Skins is a Black arts institution dedicated to fostering cultural curiosity and celebrating Black artistry through music.
