But, wait, what exactly is cyclocross?
According to Cyclocross Magazine, the sport is “a very specific type of bike racing.
For the most part, the course is off-road but there are sometimes portions of pavement included in the course.
You can expect to encounter grass, dirt, mud, gravel, sand, and a whole slew of other assortments and combinations.” 1
At Fruitlands Museum, the races consist of many laps of a short course (1.5–2 miles) featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles that require riders to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction, and remount.
Races for senior categories generally take between 30 minutes and an hour to complete, depending on ground conditions. This year’s course is longer than last year's and features new obstacles that take full advantage of the hilly terrain.
Fruitlands’ Cup of Cyclocross is part of the New England Cyclocross BAR (Best All-Around Rider) Series.
The series tracks points for 17 categories/classes over 14 events during the 2016 NE cyclocross campaign.
The finals take place in Fitchburg, MA, on November 27.
If you just want to watch this crazy sport, come to Fruitlands Museum on October 22, starting at 8:30AM.
The event is FREE to spectators.
(To visit the museum buildings, spectators pay admissions or use their membership.)
Cyclocross participants receive free admission to the museum buildings on race day.
