Since 2013, the Waltham Land Trust has held the Western Greenway 5K Trail Walk/Run benefit event where people of all ages traverse 3.1 miles through and around a variety of habitats, including cattail marshes, forests, vernal pools, and open meadows in North Waltham and Belmont.The 9th annual Race for Open Space fundraiser starts at 1 pm from the old Met State Hospital administration building on Metropolitan Parkway North (off Trapelo Road), taking walkers and runners on a figure eight pattern through Beaver Brook North Reservation and Rock Meadow on the Western Greenway Trail and other paths.
Walkers and families encouraged!
The fee to walk or run the course is $25 for current WLT members, $30 for non-members, and $15 for kids aged 12 and under ($5 more after October 20).
The first one hundred people to sign up get the cool race t-shirt!
Timed winners in various age categories will be able to select their prizes, with leftovers being given away to lucky bib numbers so that anyone who registers can be a winner.

Head on Trapelo Road in North Waltham to the traffic light with Forest Street and Metropolitan Parkway North. Head north on Metropolitan Parkway about 0.5 mile to the staging area at the old administration building of the Met State property next to the City of Waltham's Dog Ranch.
