On Sunday, September 21st join thousands of singers and gather along the banks of the Charles for a special community event designed to welcome in the fall while drawing attention to the Charles River, its parklands and bridges.
RiverSing: Bridging the Charles with Voice and Light is a free fall celebration featuring seasonal music and communal singing led by Revels music director George Emlen with help from over 100 members of Boston area choruses like the Mystic Chorale, the Halalisa Singers and Revels Repertory Company, saxophones and a folk band (plus giant puppets Oshun and Poseidon) all perched atop the John W. Weeks Footbridge linking Allston and Cambridge. Revelers are invited to come early and spread their picnic blankets along both sides of the river.
The communal singing begins at 6:00 pm and lasts until sunset when the underbelly of the Weeks Bridge will be uniquely illuminated by flamboyant LED lighting. The night will close with a “River Hymn” written for RiverSing by George Emlen, the evening’s conductor, and spontaneous dancing along the Charles to the irresistible sounds of the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band. (RiverSing lyrics can be obtained in advance by writing RiverSing08@yahoo.com)

RiverSing is a collaboration between Revels (The Christmas Revels, SummersDay Revels) and the Charles River Conservancy. In 2004 Revels first teamed up with the CRC to create a free musical fall equinox event along the banks of the Charles River. Since then it has established itself as a beloved Boston area tradition.

Background:
The Charles River Conservancy (CRC) has previously illuminated the Weeks Bridge for a single night on the winter solstice 2001 and again on May 2nd 2003. The purpose each time was to draw attention to the bridge’s architectural beauty, to build support for lighting bridges and to show the need for restoring the Weeks and other bridges as part of the parklands renewal. The Conservancy believes the Charles River Parklands themselves are a living work of art, where seasonal changes of nature and mirrored light from the river play in concert with the architecture of the bridges. In collaborating with the Revels in producing RiverSing, the Conservancy seeks to achieve a fusion of musical and environmental art in which the audience at the event becomes part of the
performance
Revels, founded in 1971, is best known for its annual Christmas Revels community celebrations at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre. Revels also produces the annual Midsummer Revels family celebration at The Children’s Museum in Boston. Revels has a 34-year long tradition of marking the calendar with participatory festivities and works with large numbers of volunteers of all ages on a regular basis.
