Each child is encouraged to explore the world within the prepared environment of the classroom as well as the world outside of it. This exploration takes place in a nurturing atmosphere that encourages self-motivation and social awareness.
At AVMS, nature study is a key element of a well-rounded Montessori education--along with music, movement, child-centered art, field trips and outdoor play. The school has their own staff naturalist, Stephen DeFlorio, who leads the children on adventures and teaches programs that emphasize each season's unique events, from planting in the garden, to fall harvest, snowshoeing, maple syrup production, vernal pools.
The children learn from hands-on exploration both in and out of the classroom. The school takes ample advantage of its access to miles of conservation land right out their back door.
Applications are current being accepted for the 2012-2013 school year for toddlers through elementary school. There is also availability for the current school year. The school welcomes visitors to come, learn, and see what a true Montessori education looks like in action--to view children thriving in their work at school.
An essential component of the Montessori program is one of a prepared environment in all areas of learning which aid the child in the learning process. The Montessori classroom is comprised of a mixed-age group of children. This allows for greater social interaction and enhanced learning from one's peers.
The learning in a Montessori classroom is an exciting process of discovery and concentration. Children develop an internal self-discipline and naturally embrace a life-long love of learning. In the mixed age classroom (ages toddler, 3-6, 6-9 and 9-12) the children share their knowledge with one another.
The younger learn from the older and are motivated by their peers. The older children reinforce their learning by sharing with their peers.
AVMS also offers before and after school care programs, vacation programs, and a summer intensive program for students at the school.
