A Sailor's Life for Me: School Vacation Family Fun & Silhouettes for Sharing!
April 16 - 20, 2012
Swing in a hammock, furl a sail, and experience life at sea in the USS Constitution Museum's hands-on exhibit, 'All Hands on Deck.'
Vacation week activities include making a ship's logbook to take home, learning to march like one of Constitution's 1812 Marines (weather permitting), and using models and a water tank to discover Constitution's secrets to success. Plus, participate in an exploratory Quest through the galleries.
Create a lasting memory on April 17th & 18, 2012 and take home a portrait silhouette hand cut by Carol Lebeaux, local silhouette artist. Sign up for a ten minute slot between 10 am and 4 pm to sit for Carol as she free-hand cuts a likeness of your profile in paper! These graceful portraits were popular with sailors as mementos of their loved ones left at home. While captains and officers could afford to take hand painted miniatures of their wives and children to sea, sailors brought the more affordable paper silhouette along with them.
Sign up in advance to reserve your time slot. Sittings are ten minutes long for each silhouette cut. For example, if you wish to have three children sit for portraits, please allow for three time slots or 30 minutes. If the individual is not available to sit in person, silhouettes can be created from photos. If using photos, take close-up clear profile views. Bring along several photos of each subject showing the right side of the face.

Silhouettes are $33. Duplicate copies are $12. Mats and classic oval frames are also available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds go to support education programs at the USS Constitution Museum.
