The octopus will also be the subject of the Aquarium’s spectacular, holiday week ice sculpture, which will make its debut on Central Wharf on Dec.
27, so long as the weather remains cold!
Most school vacation weeks in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire run from Dec.
23 to Jan.
2, and a warm respite for families during the holiday is the fascinating “Tentacles Take Hold.”
Visitors can see the eight-legged octopi use their giant suckers, camouflage themselves, and taste things using their skin.
Known for their intelligence, they can open jars, make their way through a maze, mimic the movements of other animals, and climb into boxes.
Another mysterious Aquarium favorite in “Tentacles Take Hold” is the cuttlefish.
These small, strange-looking fish have the ability to change color and pattern to communicate with other cuttlefish and camouflage themselves to hide from predators.
They have human-like eyes and have a peculiar way of hovering in the water.
Baby cuttlefish were hatched at the beginning of November which you can learn more about here – or see in person at the Aquarium.
Visitors can also take a tropical get-away in the Aquarium’s Simons IMAX Theatre while watching the acclaimed film “Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland.” Even Aquarium biologists leave this movie with a sense of awe.
The Galapagos Islands are one of the most bizarre yet beautiful places on the planet.
Watch ancient, giant tortoises, penguins at the equator, swimming iguanas, and other uniquely evolved animals on this isolated, island oasis.
This December School Vacation from December 26 through December 31, the Aquarium will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On New Year’s Day, the Aquarium will be open from noon to 6 p.m. For more visitor information or tickets, visit www.neaq.org.
