The Central Mass Space Modeling Society (CMASS) hosts various launches throughout central and eastern Massachusetts. This amateur model rocket launch in Sudbury is open to all participants and families are welcome. Children as young as 5 years old can enjoy model rocketry with adult supervision. Launch pads are provided. There is a small fee to cover insurance. Food is available for purchase.

Model rocketry grew out of interest in the 'Space Race' in the 1950s. Today's model rockets are constructed lightweight, safe materials -- such as cardboard, plastic, and balsa wood -- and are fueled by single-use rocket motors manufactured by professional concerns. These rockets may be flown over and over simply by replacing the used motor with a fresh one. They typically contain a parachute, streamer, or other recovery device that allows them to land gently for later reflight.
