Just 26 years old at the time, Cocchiaro had a front row seat for Columbia’s first five landings, documenting the news as editor of Dessert Wings, the Base’s installation newspaper.
On the run-up to the first landing, Cocchiaro had the chance to interview and photograph shuttle pilots John Young, Bob Crippen, Ken Mattingly, Hank Hartsfield and others. Hear from Cocchiaro’s personal experience about what it was like the day of the first landing and see personal photos and “home-made” eye-witness videos of behind-the-scenes activities, including the shuttle’s landing and post-touchdown local news coverage.
