happy birthday neptune photoCelebrate Neptune’s first birthday as it arrives back to its approximate position in which it was first spotted. The first direct observation of the blue-green gas giant was made on September 23, 1846.

When it arrives on July 12, 2011, Neptune will have completed one revolution of the Sun – just one Neptunian year since it was discovered 165 Earth years ago!

Discovery Center Educator Mal Cameron will discuss the controversial discovery of the planet and what we have learned about it since, using data from Voyager II and the Hubble Space Telescope.
