Come explore the vast opportunities that exist in the worlds of biology and engineering with BioBuilder this spring.
High school students are invited to this BioBuilder Bootcamp where they will be introduced to the process of biodesign using BioBuilder’s MIT-derived curriculum, designed by educators on a mission to transform STEM education.
The laboratory-based workshop will expose students to molecular biology techniques and engineering design principles for reprogramming microorganisms.
In addition, students will work in teams on their own biodesign project -- exploring how these principles might be used to solve real world problems and meet society’s needs.
They will become BioBuilders, ready to develop future biotechnologies.
The Bootcamp will be led by Dr. Kate Bacon Schneider, who received her Ph.D.
in Biology from MIT, where she studied quorum sensing in Bacillus subtilis, and was previously an instructor in the MIT Department of Biology.
She has been working with BioBuilder through our High School Apprenticeship Program since 2016, and as an instructor in the BioBuilder Learning Lab since 2018.
Located in the heart of Kendall Square, the BioBuilder Learning Lab at LabCentral offers students hands-on experience in a teaching lab surrounded by scientists and entrepreneurs in a premier laboratory facility where over 50 life science companies accelerate innovation on a daily basis.
Required background: A working knowledge about DNA as the coding language of cells.
Some understanding of cells and cell function.
Familiarity with a laboratory environment is preferred but not required.
A minimum of 10 attendees will be needed to run this workshop.
