'We the Scientists' tells the story of a group of parents whose children were diagnosed with a rare and fatal genetic condition known as Niemann-Pick disease Type C.
Recognizing that science wasn't moving quickly enough to save the lives of their children, the parents join forces with researchers and doctors in order to speed up the search for an effective drug.
In the process, the parents turn themselves into citizen scientists, identifying promising new treatments, devising experiments to test them, and co-authoring scientific papers.
They also help push forward a novel collaboration that provides a way for other patients and families to get involved in science and gain recognition as experts.
Now, Marcus comes to the stage of the Museum of Science, Boston, joined by Insoo Hyun, Director of the Center for Life Sciences, for a conversation focused on the rise of the patient- and citizen scientist-led research movement.
Book signing with Amy Marcus to follow; copies of 'We the Scientists' for sale on-site by the Harvard Book Store.
