Come if you dare this October into the woods of West Gloucester. Here you will relive the horror that took place many moons ago on the grounds of Camp Spindrift. The Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee, along with the Cape Ann YMCA, will recreate the haunting tale, Legend of Red Eyes.
See how the tale is told of Flying Eagle, the Indian chief of the Spindrift Tribe. Hop aboard a train that will take you deep into the woods, but be careful, you never know what could be lurking in the darkness. Once you get to the drop off area, if you make it there, take a little stroll through the haunted camp where you will learn about who the townspeople feared so many years ago, Chief Flying Eagle.
Continue on if you’re not scared off, and end your frightful night, attempting to escape the horror through the only way out, the never ending maze. Upon exiting the never ending maze, stop at the fortune tent and have your future told.
Maybe this will be the way to calm your nerves or will Red Eyes have something else in mind. Before catching the last train to normalcy, grab a snack, like hot dogs, drinks and other Halloween treats. All the excitement begins on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 5pm running until 10pm. So if you are up for reliving a little bit of a Gloucester Tale, stop by and see if you feel the spirits that are said to still haunt these grounds where the Spindrift Indians once called home.
The following are the dates of operation: October 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, and 31. The times are 5pm till 10pm each night with Halloween night closing at 9pm. Between 5 pm and 6:30pm each night, it is a special fright time for the little ones. Bring the kids and have them enjoy a toned down version of our haunting tale. Then, starting at 7pm, we turn it up notch for the older kids and adults. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, tear down, and as a cast member. If you are interested and are 16+ years old, contact Dave Tucker at 978-281-1867, Al Kipp at bigkippa4535@msn.com, or stop by Tuckers Family Diner in Gloucester, in person and ask for the volunteer sign up sheet.

Warning - NOT FOR CHILDREN
CAMP SPINDRIFT WARNING - The 'early' kids evening is absolutely inappropriate for young children. Picture castle of the damned advertising themselves to kids and then doing the same show that they usually do. The organizers should be ABSOLUTELY ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.
The 'early' kids events included the following: 1. rude-smoking parking lot attendants 2. chainsaws 3. grave-diggers who are very scary looking and tell your three-six year old that they are digging their grave, 4. body-part stew, 5. bloody images. It is definitely PG-13-R rate. All of the kids on the train that I was on were crying. There isn't a way out once you were in. I did ask our tour guide to tone it down- and thankfully she did. However, how did it get that far??? Additionally, we tried to arrive right at 5 pm so that it was still light out (and therefore less scarey). However, they were so disorganized that it took over an hour and fifteen minutes for the first 'train' to leave (and therefore was dark when we went in). DISGUSTING!
Completely Inappropriate For The Under 8 Crowd
I could see this being pretty for teens - adults. However, the group should absolutely not advertise the early 5-6:30 pm toned down kids time. Among the problems -
1. Smoking in the parking lot by attendants- busdrivers (you have to park at Wingersheek beach and take a bus in.).
2. Cranky attendants (inappropriately so to be around little kids).
3. Content completely inappropriate for children. All of the kids on the train were crying very hard because they were so frightened. They were met by a man who told them he was digging their graves, then led through a dark tunnel with strobe lights - screaming and real chainsaws. All of the halloween gouls were extremely frightening looking - tall with lit up eyes. A frightening man was cooking body parts - there was a murdered guy - you get the picture - R - PG rated images that the 3-6 years olds let in during 'kids' time should not have seen. The ghouls jumped out and tried to touch some of the already crying children. I stood up at that point and asked our 'guide' that they stop the noises and not have any other people approach us (they did stop - but I couldn't believe it got that far). There really isn't an easy way out once you are in, as it is within dark woods. Otherwise, I would have left immediately. The adults involved REALLY should be ashamed of themselves for letting little ones in, actually. To top it off, after the scary stuff was over, our 'train' went by a crashed up Thomas with dead bloody fake people under them (luckily none of the kids noticed the bodies)... YEAH that is little kids content. I was absolutely ashamed that they let children in as a FUNDRAISER FOR A CHILDRENS PARADE AND FIREWORKS. I don't let my 6 year old view the images at home that we noted there. RELATED LINKS | ↑ top |
