The USDA Forest Service is reaching out to Boston teenagers by presenting a free workshop at Franklin Park on Saturday, May 21, designed to introduce high school students to careers in forestry and conservation.

The Future Pathways to Conservation Workshop is a program developed by the USDA Forest Service, along with several partners including the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, to link Boston high school students with career opportunities in conservation-related fields.

The May 21 Careers Workshop, to be held at White Stadium in Franklin Park, will introduce high school students to conservation careers by having them work hand-in-hand with natural resource professionals in small workshop settings.

These workshops will introduce participants to a specific profession by using some of the tools and skills in hands-on activities. Most of the workshops will be in outdoor settings.

Participants can also talk directly with a resource professional about a typical day on the job, career options, employment opportunities, education requirements, salary expectations, work locations, hazards, and rewards. These natural resource professionals may also serve as contact points for students as they move forward with their own career paths.

The event will feature workshops in a wide variety of conservation careers including animal husbandry (zoo keeping), arboriculture, archaeology, botany, community activism, conservation education, conservation law enforcement, entomology, fisheries, forestry, horticulture, hydrology, landscape architecture, mountain rescue, nature writing, outdoor guiding, recreation management and planning, technology in conservation, wilderness ranger, and wildland fire-fighting.

Pre-registration by May 18 is strongly recommended as many workshops may fill up. To register or for more information please follow the links for the registration and medical forms: www.fs.fed.us or call Rob Fallon of the USDA Forest Service at (603) 528-8769.
