This year visiting artists from the Wuqiang Nianhua Museum in Northern China will join in the celebration. They will demonstrate how traditional wood block prints of special New Year symbols and designs are made. Visitors can attend workshops to make their own prints in the Art Studio (sign up in advance at the event) and see an exhibit of Chinese New Year Prints (nianhua) on display.
A variety of Chinese performances will be taking place throughout the day. To welcome the New Year, Yang’s Martial Arts Association of Andover and Boston will perform the traditional Chinese Lion Dance. Students from Yang’s Martial Arts and the Bow Sim Mark Tai Chi Arts Association will also present martial arts demonstrations. Other performances include Cantonese opera by the Queshing Chinese Opera Association and Chinese dance by students from Westwood Chinese School. Rabbits from Zoo New England will make a special appearance.
Families can take part in special Chinese New Year activities:
• Make a hongbao, red envelope, to share good wishes
• Play tangrams, a traditional puzzle game
• Fold a paper rabbit or make a rabbit collage to celebrate the year
And much more! Participating in Boston Children’s Museum’s Chinese New Year Festival allows visitors to experience Chinese culture and tradition first-hand!
