massachusetts day of puppetry events photoGovernor Deval Patrick has proclaimed April 26th, 2014 to be the “Massachusetts Day of Puppetry,” thereby recognizing the contributions of puppeteers across Massachusetts to the state’s vibrant arts and culture scene.

In celebration, Puppet Showplace Theatre, New England’s premier presenter of puppetry arts, will present two performances of 'Trickster Tales” by Barefoot Puppets. Showtimes are at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.

An afternoon meet and greet with refreshments and puppet making activities will follow the 3:00pm show. Hand-crafted puppets by local and regional artists will be on display in the theatre lobby.

Performances are recommended for ages 3 and up. Tickets: $12 general admission, $8 for members. Tickets may be reserved through the box office, 617-731-6400 x 101 or online at www.puppetshowplace.org.

Arts Activism…for Kids!
Throughout the entire month of April, Puppet Showplace Theatre invites kids to participate in a letter-writing campaign thanking the Governor for his continued support of the arts. Letters and children’s artwork can be dropped off at Puppet Showplace Theatre or sent directly to Gov. Patrick at State House, Room 360 Boston, MA. 02133.

The National Day of Puppetry was started by the Puppeteers of America in 1999 and is an annual event to celebrate the art of puppetry. Puppet Showplace Theatre and the Boston Area Guild of Puppetry annually organize events during April to celebrate.

'Trickster Tales” by Barefoot Puppets is a side-splitting selection of famous folktales from West Africa starring Anansi the Spider, whose appetite always overrules his intellect. Can a spider defeat an elephant at tug-of-war? Overpower a python? Capture a cloud of hornets?

With Anansi the Spider, world famous trickster, all things are possible...if you only have a plan! This show brings traditional stories to life with expressive rod puppets, original music, and lots of puns. Performed on a large, twelve-foot stage with colorful scenery and amazing scene changes. It's a high-energy show with lots of laughs!
