La Fête des Rois (Three Kings Day) is a special tradition in France that is celebrated the first Sunday of each new year and includes a king, a queen and a special cake. The celebration of La Fête des Rois is a merging of two ancient traditions: the Roman pagan celebration, Les Saturnales, and the Christian celebration of Epiphany, which is the arrival of the three wise men in Bethlehem. In France the tradition of serving a frangipane-filled tart called la galette can be traced back to the 14th century. A small bean, coin or porcelain fève is baked inside the cake and whoever receives the little favor is then crowned king/queen for the day.
