When the 1801 Paul Revere bell at Old South Meeting House rings out at 4:30 PM on September 7, passersby in the busy Downtown Crossing neighborhood will surely check their watches. The bell is struck by the clock on the hour. So, what's the reason for this unusual mid-hour noise? The historic bell is actually ringing out in celebration of an important birthday - for the City of Boston!
This September 7th in honor of Charter Day, church bells will ring in three locations - Boston, Dorchester and Watertown.
But, what's a birthday without cake? Locals and tourists alike are invited to join a free public party - complete with cake and bells - at Reader's Park (the plaza opposite Old South Meeting House on Washington Street in Downtown Crossing, Boston).
The celebration is being hosted by the Partnership of the Historic Bostons, with the support of Downtown Boston BID, Old South Meeting House, and the National Park Service.
Happy Birthday Boston!
