Mount Auburn Cemetery, America’s first landscaped cemetery, the model for modern day park systems and celebrating its 175th Anniversary this year, unveils its restored stained glass chancel window to its original location over the alter in Bigelow Chapel.

After a summer on the conservator’s bench, the unveiling will be held in Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery on October 28, 2006 at 4 p.m. Meg Winslow, Curator of Historical Collections at Mount Auburn Cemetery, will speak about the project and conservators from Serpentino Stained & Leaded Glass, Inc. will be on hand to answer questions. The event is free but please register online or call 617-607-1995 to RSVP.

About the Chancel Windows
Originally installed in 1846, the hand-painted glass chancel window measures 21 1/2 feet high by 9 feet wide and is composed of 36 panels containing over 4,000 individual pieces of blown glass. It is considered one of the important early works produced by the Edinburgh based Scottish firm of Ballantine and Allan that also created the now lost windows for the Houses of Parliament in London. It is one of the few examples of that firm’s early work that survive today.
