On Friday, December 6, 2013, the Irish International Immigrant Center (IIIC) will present its annual Solas Awards during a celebration at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum.
Named from the Gaelic word for “light,” the Solas Awards are given each year to leaders who are committed to the IIIC’s vision of a shared society where all people are welcomed and valued and enjoy equal opportunities, protections, and respect.
Past recipients of the Solas Award include Senator Edward Kennedy, President Clinton, and Mary Robinson, past president of Ireland.
At this year’s celebration the IIIC will be launching its 25th year serving immigrants from Ireland and around the world as they honor:
• Joyce and Bill Cummings, Cummings Foundation founders, in recognition of their commitment to reducing violence, prejudice, and intolerance, and for their tremendous philanthropic example.
• John (Jack) Joyce, Managing Director at Deutsche Bank Securities, in recognition of his commitment to providing educational opportunities through scholarships for inner-city youth and for his role as an adviser for IIIC’s internship program for Irish University students and recent graduates.
• Raj Sharma, Managing Director, Wealth Management, and head of The Sharma Group of Merrill Lynch Private Banking & Investment Group, in recognition of his commitment to promoting cross-cultural dialogue and understanding, and for his inspirational example of achievement and civic engagement as an immigrant himself.
• John Hailer, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Americas and Asia for Natixis Global Asset Management, in recognition of his leadership in promoting philanthropy and volunteerism, and for his advocacy for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
