Celebrate the year of inoshishi, the boar, at The Peabody Essex Museum. Japanese New Year at PEM is co-sponsored by the Japan Society of Boston and the Lowell Institute. For reservations, please call 978-745-9500, ext 3011.

Lion Dance: 12:30 pm
Shishimai lion dance by Stephen Long, and taiko performance by Odaiko New England.

Drop-in Art Activities: 12:30 - 2:30 pm
Paint your own Daruma doll or make a New Year card for the year of the inoshishi, or boar.

The Koto: 2 - 2:20 pm
Ryuko Mizutani performs traditional and contemporary music on the Japanese koto.

Taiko Drumming: 3 - 3:15 pm
Members of Odaiko New England play festive Japanese taiko drums.

Rice Pounding: 3:20 pm
The honorable Mr. Yoichi Suzuki, consul general of Japan, and Peter Grilli, president of Japan Society of Boston, demonstrate rice pounding, or mochitsuki. Sample fresh mochi.
