The Institute brings the decisive deliberation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to life through the Great Senate Debate program; including archival footage of Martin Luther King and reenactments of pivotal speeches by legendary Senators Edward M. Kennedy, Robert Byrd, and Everett Dirksen.
Make your own “I Have a Dream” pledge
Martin Luther King dedicated his life to his dream of equality for all people. The Institute invites kids to share their hopes and dreams for the future, and brainstorm how they will work to make them a reality by contributing to this collaborative word collage.
Valentines for Vets
Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” Answer King’s question by giving back to those in your community who fought for your Country. Through the Institute’s Valentines for Vets program children can design a valentine to be sent to a local veterans. The Institute has partnered with local VA hospitals to distribute the valentines.
Future Senator
It’s never too early to get involved! The live Future Senator with Ruff Ruffman! program introduces 5 through 11 year-old visitors to the legislative process. Inside the Institute’s full-scale Senate Chamber, young “Future Senators” are introduced to an issue relevant to kids: whether the US government should require a longer school day.
Tour the Institute
Tour the Institute any time throughout the day. Visit Senator Kennedy’s Office to view photographs documenting his relationship to MLK and engage with our digital exhibits, including profiles of Senators and non-elected officials who have made a difference in improving the lives of Americans over the years.
The Institute is located on Columbia Point in Dorchester, next to the JFK Presidential Library and Museum.
