Through the HATCH program (Hatchling and Turtle Conservation Headstarting), Zoo New England’s Grassroots Wildlife Conservation (GWC) protects local Blanding’s turtle nests throughout the summer until the hatchlings are collected in the fall and then raised by students in local classrooms throughout the school year.
Each spring, when the turtles have grown to a size that increases their chance of survival, the students participate in their release back into the wild.
All proceeds will support the conservation work of Zoo New England’s GWC.
Through innovative, community-based outreach and resource initiatives, GWC has engaged thousands of schoolchildren and volunteers in local on-the-ground rare species conservation work.
Last fall, Grassroots Wildlife Conservation merged with Zoo New England.
