This Indigenous Peoples' Day, we celebrate and honor intersectionality and interconnectedness through art-making, storytelling, performance and conversation with local Indigenous artists from across the city we now know as Boston. The Gardner Museum is honored to collaborate with Mar Parrilla (Taíno Afroborikua) to amplify the voices of local Indigenous artists and activists.
Join us for art-making in the Studio, stories in the Living Room, and a powerful performance and discussion with Indigenous artists and activists in Calderwood Hall.
Land Acknowledgement in Jordan Garden | 11:30 am
Elizabeth Solomon (Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag) opens the day with a Land Acknowledgment.
Art-Making Bertucci Education Studio | 11:30 am-4 pm
Drop by the Education Studio for hands-on art-making. Explore the art of adornment and sculpt a pendant using air dry clay, molds and other decorative materials in an activity designed by Polly Thayer Starr Visiting Studio Artist Erin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate). All materials will be provided.
Reading in the Living Room | 12 pm & 2 pm
Special guest artist Jannette Vanderhoop (Aquinnah Wampanoag) reads aloud from her children’s book, Cranberry Day: A Wampanoag Harvest Celebration, and shares the cultural significance of cranberries and the celebration of the cranberry harvest each year.
Performance & Talkback in Calderwood Hall | 3-4:30 pm
Join us for a powerful dance performance by Danza Orgánica followed by a discussion featuring participating BIPOC artists and collaborators. Luminary and award-winning choreographer Mar Parrilla (Taíno Afroborikua), founder of Danza Orgánica, joins community leaders and activists Rosalba Solis, Jannette Vanderhoop (Aquinnah Wampanoag) and Khury Petersen-Smith for a discussion moderated by Eroc Arroyo-Montano (Boricua) exploring intersectional Indigenous identities, complexities, and cultures.
