The Medford Public Library will celebrate Black History Month on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m., with the Friends of African Dance and Drum Culture.

This is a drumming program with drummers dressed in authentic costumes who beat out African rhythms as the dancers, including an 8-year-old girl, perform.

The group is comprised of members of the African Dance and Drum community of Boston, which includes core members from various ethnic backgrounds from the United States and guest artists from West Africa. They begin with some singing and playing, demonstrate dances and drumming, briefly describe the origins of West African Dance and its purpose in society, do more dancing and playing, then invite the audience to participate.

This program is sponsored by a grant from the Medford Arts Council, a local agency that is supported by the MA Cultural Council, a state agency and by the Friends of the Medford Public Library.
