Learn to Skate
LTS - Beginner
This program is intended for kids who are new to skating. The focus is on having fun while introducing them to basic skating skills. We work on getting up, balancing, gliding and stopping. We generally start each session with a lot of crates for assistance (NYH does not supply crates). 1 practice per week. NYH will run 2 x 9 weeks sessions. The first will start 11/13 and the 2nd will start 1/22. Click here for the schedule.
LTS - Advanced
This program continues to work on the skating basics but introduces the concept of edges and other aspects of skating. It is still designed for someone relatively new to skating but is totally self sufficient on the ice. Participants should be able to get up on their own and be able to easily maneuver around the ice. Crates are not permitted in this program. 1 practice per week. NYH will run 2 x 9 weeks sessions. The first will start 11/13 and the 2nd will start 1/22. Click here for the schedule.
The primary curriculum for Learn to Skate is designed and implemented by Pro Ambitions, Newton Youth Hockey's vendor for skating and skill development. With 2 sessions per year being offered, you can just do one or easily do both. We will let you know if you should move to the more advanced group. Our goal is to make it fun for all participants. Please follow this link for more details on the Learn to Skate programs.
Learn To Play Hockey
This is our introduction to hockey program. We are on the ice twice per week. One day per week is dedicated to skills and drills. On the second day per week we break into teams and play cross ice games. Sticks and pucks are used. Participants need the full complement of hockey pads. The program continues to build on skating skills, but will introduce hockey stops, cross overs, more advanced balancing, stick use and puck handling, etc. Kids are placed into the program based on their birth year. From there, they are assigned teams and will continue with those same teams for the whole season. The program will run for 19 weeks, starting on 11/13 and finishing on 3/16. Please follow this link for more details on the Learn to Play program.
