The 65th running of the $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap will feature some of the best horses in the country. The historic race has been won by racing legends Seabiscuit (1937), Whirlaway (1942) and Cigar (1995 and 1996).

There will 11 races in all, beginning at 12:45 p.m. The MassCap itself will be run at about 5:30. Get a commemorative 2007 MassCap hat free with paid admission. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Rte. 1A in East Boston. Blue Line accessible.

Directions from downtown Boston: Take the Callahan Tunnel. At the exit of the tunnel, the road becomes Route 1A North. Follow 1A for two miles until the first set of lights. Go straight through the lights and the main entrance is 200 yards further on the right. Look for a large green and white sign with the Suffolk Downs logo.

From points west: Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) East, through the Ted Williams Tunnel. Then follow the directions in 'From points south.'

From points south: Take I-93 North to I-90 East, through the Ted Williams Tunnel. Follow to Route 1A North. Proceed until first set of lights. Go straight through lights and main entrance is 200 yards further on right. Look for a large green and white sign with the Suffolk Downs logo.

From points north: Take I-93 South to the Callahan Tunnel, then follow the directions from downtown Boston. OR Take I-95 South to Route 1 South. Take an un-numbered exit at Route 60 (large Showcase Cinemas complex on right) and follow the rotary halfway around to Route 60 East. Follow straight for approximately three miles through two sets of lights, a rotary, another set of lights and then the large Bell Circle rotary where the roadway becomes Route 1A South. Suffolk Downs will be ahead on the left. Look for a large green and white sign with the Suffolk Downs logo.

  • Get a close look at the horses competing in each race by going to the paddock area located near the finish line beforehand.
