arlington children's theatre's 'ten minute play festival' photoWho says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? This year marks Arlington Children’s Theatre’s (ACT) twentieth year, a ripe old age by children’s theater standards, but they’re obviously still game to try something new.

For three shows over the weekend of October 14, this venerable Arlington institution premieres its first-ever Ten Minute Play Festival, showcasing eight engaging short plays from five different playwrights, including Christopher Durang, David Ives and Arlington’s own Paula Chase.

“We like to shake things up a bit and provide different theater experiences for our kids as well as our audiences,” said artistic director Colleen Rua. “Everyone gets a pretty juicy part--or two--and the format allows them to really dig into their characters and explore the questions posed by the plays.”

What questions? Ever wished a magical bell would allow you a second chance at that first impression? Wondered if the big bad wolf would come off quite so mean if he sang to his porcine quarry? Been driven to the brink of reason by bureaucratic madness?Wondered how Hamlet would sound if written by Dr. Seuss? Or would that kid really jump off the bridge if his popular friends led the way?

Featuring a cast of 24 children ages 6-16 from Arlington and five neighboring towns, this production marks another first for ACT: two teenagers in directorial roles. “These two have grown up with ACT,” recalls Rua. “They know the ropes and this is our chance to say: ‘We believe in you!’ And they’ve run with it.” After being involved with ACT for almost 11 years, teen director Sarah Smith recalls being a directing intern, a camp counselor, and an actor in numerous ACT productions. “I feel like all of that really prepared me for this experience,” reflected Sarah. “I was a little nervous going into it, but it has turned out to be so much fun! Being the one with the vision for a show, and getting to see these talented kids bring that to life is truly amazing.”

What can happen in ten minutes? Come enjoy ACT’s response in its Ten Minute Play Festival, fast-paced and varigated fun for the entire family.
