A piper offers to do the job, and enchants the rats by playing his magical flute luring them into a mirage of cheese, in which they disappear forever. The citizens, disappointed that all he did was play a tune, offer only pocket change. The angered piper exacts revenge by playing a new tune that leads all of Hamlin's children out of town.
