bernarda alba photo'Michael John LaChiusa has done it again.

Bernada Alba is fascinating, riveting, vibrant, and exciting.' -Steven Suskind, Playbill, January 01, 2006
Based on Federico Garcia Lorca's 1936 play The House of Bernarda Alba, this masterwork by Michael John LaChiusa, composer of such critically acclaimed hits as The Wild Party and Marie Christine, originally debuted at Lincoln Center.

Bernada Alb a tells the tales of a powerful matriarch, who imposes a strict rule on her household following her second husband's funeral: 'Not a breath of outside air is going to enter this house.

It's going to feel like we've bricked up the doors and windows,' she proclaims.

Bernarda's five daughters, however, struggle with her cold wishes.

The girls' dreams and desires challenge their mother's harsh rules and the outside world begins to slowly permeate their isolated existence.

LaChiusa has powerful, haunting and captivating musical interludes for these sad sibling spinster sirens, in a piece inspired by flamenco's pulsing castanets and resounding rhythmic stomps.

It is a unique and challenging piece of theatre, that the young comapny could't be more excited to bring to Stoneham Theatre's stage, in the hands of its talented act 3 performers and its director, Christopher James Webb.
