The play tells the story of Joan of Arc, the French girl who helps drive the English out of Paris with the helpful advice of saints that only she can see. The story begins on her father's farm in Domremy, where Joan is frustrated by her desire to help the French, and she first sees the saints.
They encourage her to work to restore the faith of the French people. Following their advice, she leaves home and seeks help from Robert de Badricourt, an army captain, making friends with the charming Alain and his skeptical compatriot Paris along the way. Badricourt sends Joan to the Dauphin's castle. She sneaks in during a masquerade ball, and tricks the attendees into revealing which of them is the Dauphin.
Impressed with her ingenuity, the Dauphin talks with Joan and agrees to travel to Reims to be crowned King of France. Joan's following grows, as does the intrigue as jealous members of the court plot her demise. In the climactic scene, Joan and the Dauphin lead an attack on Paris, a battle like you've never seen before. Unfortunately, her detractors' plan also comes to fruition, and Joan is captured.
