Annie, one of the most famous family musicals of all time, tells the rags-to-riches story of a plucky, young red-head living during the Great Depression who journeys from her hard-knock life in a New York orphanage to love and luxury in millionaire Oliver Warbuck’s mansion.
The musical, inspired by the Little Orphan Annie comic strip from the 1920s, won seven Tony Awards when it first ran on Broadway in 1977 and has been produced around the world in countless productions since, including a recent Broadway revival that just concluded performances in January.
Annie Jr. has a cast and crew of over 60 students in grades 5-8 as well as another dozen parent volunteers.
This dedicated group has been hard at work since January learning lines, song and dance numbers (including the show’s most memorable ones ‘Tomorrow,’ and ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’), building sets, sewing costumes and every other aspect of the show.
”Rehearsals were definitely slow at first, but when we started running the whole show and got our costumes, it became super exciting!
Everyone is having so much fun,” says Lucy Chatfield, the 8th grader playing the title role of Annie.
Kristin Hall, Lincoln School’s drama teacher, is Annie Jr.’s director, choreographer and producer.
Ms. Hall received her theatre education training in the UK before coming to Lincoln School nine years ago where she has worked on over two dozen productions.
Ms. Hall says, “What I love about doing a big musical like Annie Jr., which is set in another time period, is not only the community generated across the grades and the incredible sense of achievement the kids earn but how they learn about history and start to empathize with the characters and what they’re going through.
That parents during the Great Depression would abandon you because they couldn’t afford you - that is entirely new to them.”
Blake Siskavich, who teaches kindergarten at Lincoln School, is Annie's musical director.
Mr. Siskavich also has a degree in music education and vocal performance, as well as a long history as a musician and performer, including as a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.
'I am so excited to be a part of Annie Jr. in a town like Lincoln that is so supportive of the arts.
It's inspiring as a teacher and musician to help these students, who are dedicated and excited to take part, learn the show,' says Mr. Siskavich.
For many – including director Ms. Hall, Annie was their first introduction to a big musical.
It planted the seeds for a love of music, performance and the magic of theatre that has lasted a lifetime.
Lincoln Middle School’s production of Annie Jr. is set to inspire another generation of young theatergoers, not to mention their nostalgic parents.
