“We were sitting by the fountain at the spa.
For a long while he said nothing, just stared into the water.
Then all at once he turned and said, ‘What am I to do?’ And I said, without hesitation, ‘You must choose.‘”
Set amidst the glamour of 1960s Venice, this dark, glittering musical centers on the efforts of the celebrated film director Guido Contini to rescue his creative and private lives from the brink of destruction.
As he begins production on a new film, Guido confronts the extraordinary women – from his past, present, and future – who have influenced his life through Maury Yeston’s lush score, which features “Be Italian”, “Unusual Way”, and more.
Staged on the American Repertory Theater’s Mainstage, Nine is a kaleidoscopic fusion of reality and creativity.
Dissecting the boundaries between life and art, Guido mines his personal life for inspiration, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.
