A note from Teddy Crecelius (director):
Step back in time to experience the beginnings of modern comedy, resurrected from the ruins of ancient Rome.
Sondheim's joyous, musical romp has desperate lovers, scheming neighbors and secrets behind every toga.
This Broadway farce uses stock characters from the ancient comedies of Plautus to prove that no matter how much we may think civilization has progressed, we still laugh at the same jokes.
Pseudolus the clever slave, brings as much delight to today's audience as to a throng of Roman citizens, crowded around a temporary wooden stage or crammed into one of the first indoor theatres, crying out for bread and circus.
Tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!
Brief reviews:
Broadway's greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written.
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville.
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum is a non-stop laugh-fest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom.
The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and a showgirl or two.
