This New England regional stage premiere of High School Musical follows Gabriella, a shy, brainy new student and Troy, the captain of the basketball team, as they discover a shared love for singing when they meet at a karaoke contest and decide to audition for the leads in their high school’s musical.

As usual, their musical path to love is not without challenges. Disney’s High School Musical is based on the Disney Channel Original Movie which had the #1 best-selling CD of 2006.

Ads in the arts

The stage production lacks the manic energy of the movie, but the characters are more likeable, and Troy can actually sing! The cast worked their tails off, and a few new songs were refreshing. Too bad about the product placement -- a certain world-wide soft drink was mentioned TWICE. Hope the theater profited. Don't believe I've ever seen advertsing on stage before, but keep in mind who owns this show.
