Two gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, have believed they are brothers their entire lives.
It comes as a shock to all when Don Alhambra, the Grand Inquisitor, reveals that one of them is the crown prince of Barataria, and was married in infancy to the beautiful Casilda.
But which gondolier is the true heir?
Further complicating matters, Casilda has fallen in love with the lowly drummer, Luiz.
