The enjoyable comedy and wonderful music begin as two Venetian gondoliers, both just married, discover that one of them is the King of Barataria. But only their absent foster mother knows which one! While she is being sought, they leave their wives and travel to Barataria to reign jointly.
To complicate matters, it is revealed that the king, whoever it is, was wed in infancy to the daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza Toro – so one of the joint kings appears to be an accidental bigamist! The duke’s daughter, now a beautiful young lady, herself has come to love a common servant, setting the scene for the Spanish lady and the Venetian wives all to come to Barataria to find out which of them is Queen.
All is resolved in the end in typical Gilbert & Sullivan fashion as the true King of Barataria is at last uncovered.
