Paintbox combines improvisation, children’s art and literacy in a production like none other; once Jack vows to save the day, he plants a seed, climbs a vine, has a series of big adventures and befriends one confused and bumbling giant.
PaintBox is a total entertainment experience. We start with a classic children’s tale that is adapted with a modern twist. Three adult actors use improvisation and cooperation to play multiple roles, solve problems and draft people from the audience to help tell the story. The Paintbox stage is simple and designed to resemble a child’s playhouse with one addition; an above-stage projection screen displays original children’s art. Each image helps to tell the story.
In between the art work, we project simple phrases, riddles and even math problems that are related to the production. Everyone joins in when it’s time to read the words out loud.
Created by Tom McCabe, a Parent's Choice Award-winning storyteller, writer and teacher, the PaintBox Theatre has enjoyed 3 successful summer programs at New Century Theatre, Smith College in Northampton, MA.
