In the cold depths of February, how about a little sci-fi, romantic comedy to take the edge off winter's chill? On the weekend of February 8th-10th, the Arlington Children's Theater presents their mid-winter, teen musical production, Little Shop of Horrors, at Arlington's historic Regent Theatre.

The musical comedy is based on the 1960 film of the same name, directed by Roger Corman. The 1982 off-Broadway musical follows the screenplay closely, but differs in some places, and inspired a new film version in 1986, starring Rick Moranis as Seymour and Steve Martin as the sadistic dentist. The Faustian tale features an enormous man-eating plant who plots world domination and terrorizes the residents of an urban skid row. This 1960's era 'doo wop' musical was written by composers Howard Ashman & Alan Menken, the same creative team behind Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.

Veteran ACT Director Colleen Rua, who is also ACT's Artistic Director, says that the show 'offers a perfect mix of challenging roles and fun roles for our older actors. Little Shop is a bit edgier than shows we have done in the past and deals with some issues that older kids are better equipped to understand and play truthfully on stage.' The show, with Musical Direction by Brendan Kenney, features a talented teenaged cast from Arlington and surrounding towns, as well as a life size man-eating plant puppet with 10 foot tentacles.

The production opens at Arlington’s renovated Regent Theater, 7 Medford Street, on Friday, February 10th, at 7:00 PM and continues on Saturday, February 9th at 2 PM and 7 PM. The show closes on Sunday, February 10th with a performance at 2 PM. The Regent Theatre is conveniently located in the heart of Arlington Center and is easily accessible by public transportation.

Parking is available for a minimal fee in a municipal lot across the street from the theater. Reserved seating tickets are $15, available at http://ACT.arlington.ma.us, or by phone at 781-646-4849, or in person at the Regent Theater’s box office.
